A recent report published by the National Association of College Admission Counseling (NACAC) found that while grades, admission tests, and class rank remain the top factors in the college admission decision, a majority of colleges and universities consider the essay to be a key factor in determining which academically qualified students they would choose.In other words, when all else is equal between competing applicants, a compelling essay can make the difference.A powerful, well-written essay can also tip the balance for a marginal applicant.
While encouraging their children to strive for the best schools, they need to know that limits exist in the college search. Rees says parents must tell their children exactly how much money will be provided for their undergraduate education. Rees says she once received a phone call from parents who were unhappy that a school a long distance away had accepted their child.

"It's really important that the parents take the time to tell their child how proud they are of them," Rees says.
"And to tell them that you love them no matter what. We forget that, while they're young adults, they're still only usually 17, 18 years old and they need to hear that from their parents." Parents also need to be honest, she says.
Except for the interview, it is your only chance to share your thought, insights, and opinions; to highlight your accomplishments; and to convey your maturity and outlook on life.
If you see the college essay in this way; as an opportunity- then it is clearly worth the effort to put some extra time, thought, and energy into writing it.
She says meeting deadlines and taking responsibility for admissions are invaluable lessons.
