But all the time I’se been a-climbin’ on, And reachin’ landin’s, And turnin’ corners, And sometimes goin’ in the dark Where there ain’t been no light. Don’t you set down on the steps ’Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.Don’t you fall now— For I’se still goin’, honey, I’se still climbin’, And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.

Poetic and literary devices are the same, but a few are used only in poetry.

Here is the analysis of some of the poetic devices used in this poem.

In the last line, she finally told him never to let himself fall down.

She challenged her son to look at her and see that she is still climbing and going up the ladder even if life for her was not a crystal stair.

The metaphor used was the crystal stair, in which the mother explained that her life was not also perfect and easy.

Hence, the theme of the story is to never give up on life no matter how much it treats you badly.

Just like what the old saying says, when life gives you lemons, make some lemonade.

If it does not, no worries because you can always make other juices.

The poem consists of two ideals: the teachings of a mother to his son and the encouragement she gives despite all the hardships.

In the first part of the poem, the mother told her son about her own experiences – that life hit her with its hardest slam as well.
