Don't expect to take much money out of the operation for a while though! It does appear that starting a low cost data center is just impossible if customers demand all the various cited infrastructure bits to go along with it.The "big boys" will always offer a reasonably good product, widespread coverage, and the not-to-be-underestimated security of a name brand.I'm thinking about starting a data center, but I don't have the millions of dollars the big boys have to play with.

Redundant power with UPS, redundant cooling, redundant transit providers, etc...

I'm sure you could do it as a low-end offering, but is that really what you want to do?

My plan is to sign a lease for office space in a Class A lit building. Then start selling rack space to anybody who wants it at prices that are half that of anybody else offering data center rack space/cage space. Do you think people needing data center space will jump on a deal?

Or will I not get any sales because I'm not running a multi-million dollar operation?

Cooling: I would install 47U Cabinets with built in cooling. Who is your target market that doesn't care about power redundancy, network redundancy, or cooling?

Electricity: I'll tap into the building's power on a per-cabinet basis. With every tom, dick and harry starting a datacenter and selling everything for nothing. Those are the basics of colocation, if you don't offer those things why wouldn't they just don't it in their own office?Although since the Big DC will now be cutting into my revenue, the question then becomes, can I maximize the cabinets to make any money off leasing out space. The only people who would buy this is the bottom of the barrel who can't do the same thing on a business class internet in their home, at that rate they probably aren't the same people who will negotiate their own bandwidth commits with providers.
