This is aimed at supporting writing at mid to upper KS2 and is to be used as a scaffold for children to add their own adjectives, verbs and adverbs to.An important element of scaffolding is a skills and thinking modeled and prompted by the more knowledgeable other so that they need fewer or, ideally, none of the supports they previously used in their performance and learning.As Benko (2012/2013) reminds us, this gradual release of responsibility "is a critical—and often forgotten—aspect of scaffolding" (p. Benko (2012/2013) cites recent research about writing instruction in advising teachers that instructional scaffolding must be varied and specific depending on the teacher's purpose for prompting students.My 3 favorite added supports to get my students writing are: 1.Labeled diagrams Sometimes my students just need a little extra help with vocabulary. I will often review the diagram with students before they start writing and help them refer back to the diagram as they’re building their paragraph. Word bank Providing a word bank is a quick accommodation that both helps students with spelling and with generating ideas to write about in their paragraph.I also found that writing about non-fiction topics was something they preferred.So I started there and build a paragraph journal for my students. When it came time to take the next step into writing paragraphs, I found this was even harder for my students. In the beginning of my career, we worked HARD on writing sentences.They fill in the frames with the topic, add 3 details, and add a conclusion to the end of their paragraph. Providing a topic and some lines is all my students need to get writing! I’ll start out using the paragraph format we are familiar with and start expanding our writing by introducing new transition words or adding some more variety to our introduction and conclusion sentences. There are a few added supports I like to use in the classroom.These help provide my students with some vocabulary that may be tricky for them or it helps them plan out their writing before putting it on paper.
